(If you\u2019re 65 or older, you qualify for a higher standard deduction  \u2014 more on that below.)\n                                                <\/li>\n<li class=\"pl-4 relative marker:text-(--accent)\">\n                                                            Even if you\u2019re not required to file a tax return, there are many good reasons to do so anyway, including claiming valuable tax credits you may be eligible for, getting back any money that was withheld from your paychecks and thwarting tax scammers.\n                                                <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Taxes generally have to be filed by April 15 every year \u2014 though people who file an extension have until Oct. 15 \u2014 but if your income doesn\u2019t meet certain thresholds, you may be able to avoid what can be an onerous task for many Americans.<\/p>\n<p>Once you reach a certain income level, the law usually requires you to file taxes. For most taxpayers, that income level is equal to the standard deduction amount for their filing status.<\/p>\n<p>For context: On a federal tax return, you can claim the standard deduction and that dollar amount reduces how much of your income is subject to tax. (Many people think the earned income tax credit is available only to parents, but that\u2019s not the case.)<\/li>\n<li>If your paycheck had federal income tax withheld but your taxable income for the year was low, there\u2019s a decent chance you\u2019re owed a tax refund. If you qualify for this new deduction, you can add $6,000 (or $12,000) to the standard deduction amount for your age and filing status.<\/p>\n<p>But, there are two caveats to keep in (See this IRS page for more information on whether you need to file a tax return.)<\/p>\n<h3>IRS rules regarding your age<\/h3>\n<p>As the tables above indicate, people with income above specified levels must file a federal tax return, and the amounts vary by age (the threshold amounts are higher for people 65 and older).<\/p>\n<p>In most situations, your age for tax purposes depends on how old you were on the last day of the year. But when it comes to determining whether you have to file a return, the IRS says that if you turned 65 on New Year\u2019s Day, you are considered 65 at the end of the previous tax year. The one-day grace period allows you to use the higher income thresholds to determine whether you must file a tax return.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"rules-for-dependents\">Tax filing rules if you\u2019re a dependent<\/h3>\n<p>The IRS has different rules for dependents who have money coming in. Generally, a dependent must file a tax return and pay any taxes due. But the amounts that trigger the filing depend on the type of income \u2014 earned or unearned.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n<strong>Earned income:<\/strong> Generally characterized as a salary, wages or tips. It also includes scholarships (if taxable) and fellowship grants.<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Unearned income:<\/strong> Includes investment interest or dividends, capital gains, unemployment benefits and some trust distributions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The amount of each type of income that triggers a dependent\u2019s filing requirement is adjusted each year for inflation, and is calculated using a formula that factors in the annual standard deduction amount.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"state-rules\" data-position=\"4\" data-beam-element-viewed=\"\" data-id=\"br-h2-4-onpage-placement\" data-type=\"h2\" data-location=\"Editorial\" data-name=\"h2_all\" data-text=\"Your state may require you to file a tax return\" data-outcome=\"\">Your state may require you to file a tax return<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to a federal tax return, you may be required to file a state tax return \u2014 and you may want to so you can claim state-level tax breaks.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that some states require nonresidents who earn income in the state to file a tax return.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, nine states don\u2019t tax income (one of those states taxes investment income for some taxpayers).<\/p>\n<p>Find out if you\u2019re required to file a state income tax return by going to your state\u2019s revenue, finance or tax office website.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"rules-for-self-employed-people\" data-position=\"5\" data-beam-element-viewed=\"\" data-id=\"br-h2-5-onpage-placement\" data-type=\"h2\" data-location=\"Editorial\" data-name=\"h2_all\" data-text=\"Tax filing rules if you\u2019re self-employed\" data-outcome=\"\">Tax filing rules if you\u2019re self-employed<\/h2>\n<p>If you have income from self-employment \u2014 whether it\u2019s a side hustle or a full-time business \u2014 the rules regarding whether you have to file a tax return are different than for employees, regardless of whether your money from self-employment was your sole source of income or an occasional side job.<\/p>\n<p>You must file a federal tax return if your net earnings from self-employment are at least $400. To calculate your net earnings, you subtract your business expenses from your business income.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-situations\" data-position=\"6\" data-beam-element-viewed=\"\" data-id=\"br-h2-6-onpage-placement\" data-type=\"h2\" data-location=\"Editorial\" data-name=\"h2_all\" data-text=\"Other situations that require filing a tax return\" data-outcome=\"\">Other situations that require filing a tax return<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to requirements based on age, your filing status and income, and the rules regarding self-employment income, there are several other situations that require you to file a tax return.<\/p>\n<p>You should file a federal tax return:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you have health care coverage as a result of the Affordable Care Act, or ACA, you might need to file a return if you qualified for federal help to buy your coverage. If advance payments of the ACA premium tax credit were made for you, your spouse or a dependent who obtained marketplace medical coverage, that amount must be reported by filing a Form 1040 tax return and Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit. If you received too much premium help, you\u2019ll have to repay it when you file your return. If you didn\u2019t get enough, you can collect the extra when you file.<\/li>\n<li>If you owe any special taxes \u2014 such as the alternative minimum tax, taxes on distributions from a qualified plan like an IRA, household employment taxes for employees like a nanny, or tips you didn\u2019t report to your employer \u2014 then you need to file a federal return.<\/li>\n<li>If you (or your spouse, if filing jointly) received distributions from a health savings account, Archer MSA or Medicare Advantage MSA.<\/li>\n<li>If you worked for a church or a church-controlled organization that is exempt from paying Social Security and Medicare taxes and you had wages of $108.28 or more (see this IRS page).<\/li>\n<li>If you are still repaying the first-time homebuyers credit, which was available to first-time homebuyers from 2008 to 2010.<\/li>\n<li>If you have a tax liability and are making payments under an installment agreement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"tax-deadlines\" data-position=\"7\" data-beam-element-viewed=\"\" data-id=\"br-h2-7-onpage-placement\" data-type=\"h2\" data-location=\"Editorial\" data-name=\"h2_all\" data-text=\"Tax deadlines\" data-outcome=\"\">Tax deadlines<\/h2>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve determined that you need to file taxes, your next question may be: When do I have to file taxes?<\/p>\n<p>The deadline for filing your 2025 tax return is April 15, 2026, though you have until Oct. 15 if you file an extension.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re still not sure whether you must file a tax return, ask a tax professional, call the IRS at (800) 829-1040 or make an appointment at your nearest IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"penalties-for-not-filing\" data-position=\"8\" data-beam-element-viewed=\"\" data-id=\"br-h2-8-onpage-placement\" data-type=\"h2\" data-location=\"Editorial\" data-name=\"h2_all\" data-text=\"Penalties for not filing your taxes\" data-outcome=\"\">Penalties for not filing your taxes<\/h2>\n<p>Whether you file your return on April 15 or request an extension to file by Oct. 15, any money you owe is still due by April 15 every year.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t pay your taxes, you\u2019ll face a penalty and interest on any unpaid balance. The penalty for failing to pay your taxes by the due date is 0.5% of your unpaid tax for each month or part of a month that your return is late. This penalty is capped at 25% of late unpaid taxes. If you file your return on time and request to pay by an installment agreement, the penalty drops to 0.25% for each month or part of a month of the installment agreement.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re also charged interest on the unpaid balance. The rate is set each quarter and is based on the federal short-term rate, plus an additional 3%.<\/p>\n<p>If you owe taxes and don\u2019t file your return on time, you\u2019ll be charged a penalty for failing to file, which is a much steeper penalty than the failure-to-pay penalty. This is usually 5% of the tax owed for each month or part of a month your return is late.
